Mark Madden’s column “Assessing the Mike Tomlin era, where Steelers go from here” (Jan. 14, TribLive) is classless. Madden’s dislike of Tomlin has been evident in his columns over the years.
His argument that some of Tomlin’s greatest achievements, i.e. winning a Super Bowl, were done with Coach Bill Cowher’s players is fair. However his conclusion that Tomlin is a “fraud who drenched his shortcomings in word salad” is over the top. He even notes Tomlin never had a losing season and is tied with Chuck Noll for all-time regular season wins.
Madden doesn’t think Tomlin is a good coach, and that’s his opinion. However to refer to Tomlin as a “fraud” is over the top. C’mon Madden, you’re better than that.
