A Greensburg man was ordered to serve up to 23 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to charges related to a two-vehicle crash last summer that left another man injured.
Collin Hays, 35, pleaded guilty this week to drunken driving, reckless endangerment, hit-and-run driving and the illegal possession of a gun in connection with the crash last June 23 near a Get Go gas station on South Main Street in Greensburg.
Police said Hays was drunk when he crashed into another vehicle, then ran from the scene before being apprehended a few blocks away. According to court records, Hays refused to have his blood tested but appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.
While searching Hays’ vehicle, investigators found a cold beer in the cup holder, drug paraphernalia, a small amount of marijuana, empty cans of an alcoholic drink and a .22-caliber handgun.
As part his deal with prosecutors, charges of evading arrest, causing a vehicle crash resulting in an injury, marijuana possession and three summary traffic violations were dismissed.
Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Stewart II sentenced Hays to serve at least 11 1/2 months in jail, but gave him credit for the seven months he has been in custody since his arrest.
Hays was also ordered to pay nearly $2,100 in restitution to the injured motorist.
According to court records, the victim suffered severe injuries after being found inside his vehicle unable to move his head.
