Sen. Dave McCormick’s response to the murder of a 37-year-old mother of three on a residential street in Minneapolis, Minn., seems to have implications for every 13-year-old boy on playgrounds across the country. Apparently, it is now a crime punishable by death to “act inappropriately.”

Wow! I, myself, should have been sent to the hot seat years ago. It would be impossible for me to count the number of times I’ve acted inappropriately. That time my friend Becky Baker and I pulled grass out of our neighbor Mr. Liberto’s front yard and threw it on his porch? My dad was so mad! In McCormick’s world, Dad should have had the police at the front door hauling me off to the pen. And all those times I giggled in church. Sister Humilia would have surely filled the Allegheny County Jail week after week with students from St. Joe’s Elementary School.

I find McCormick’s comments highly inappropriate. I doubt he’ll be executed for them. But I sure would like to see him face Good’s wife in person and let her know how he feels about the situation. Oh, and I guess the guy who actually pulled the trigger is off the hook. Because, well, inappropriate actions have consequences. Or not!
