North Hills residents and municipalities are digging out and coping with the lingering effects of Sunday’s snowfall in the Pittsburgh area.

The National Weather Service in Moon measured 11.2 inches at its office, where records are recorded, shattering the record of 5.2 inches for Jan. 25 that had stood since 2014.

A summary of information residents need to know as they dig out:

North Hills School District

Because of the storm and the forecasted extremely cold temperatures, Monday and Tuesday are flexible instructional days for North Hills School District students.

All district buildings are closed, the district announced. All events and after school activities scheduled through Monday, including sports practices and contests, are canceled. A decision on Tuesday’s events had not yet been made.

Monday’s girls basketball games were tentatively scheduled to be held as a doubleheader with the boys teams on Tuesday.

No transportation will be provided either day, including nonpublic and charter school buses.

A.W. Beattie also will have flexible instructional days on Monday and Tuesday.

Ross

Ross weathered the storm effectively, thanks in large part to the efforts of its public works crews, interim Manager Jessica Crawshaw said.

“They worked nearly 23 consecutive hours and returned again early this morning to continue operations,” she said. “Public works Director Mike Funk said 75% of the roads are cleared. Over the next several days, crews will be plowing to widen roadways and applying anti-skid materials in preparation for the colder temperatures.”

Residents are asked to limit travel if possible and check in on neighbors, especially those who may need extra support, Crawshaw said.

The township municipal building and community center are closed to the public Monday. All scheduled programs and activities are canceled. Office and administrative staff will be working remotely.

Garbage collection will be delayed by one day this week. Collections will take place from Tuesday through Saturday.

West View

West View public works crews were continuing to clear and widen roads, improve intersections and address pedestrian areas Monday, borough Manager Bruce Fromlak said in a statement.

Space for plowing and snow storage is limited in my areas, the borough said. Residents are reminded to use off-street parking and not shovel or place snow from private property in the streets.

“During storms like this, patience, understanding and cooperation matter more than frustration,” Fromlak said. “Our crews are working hard, conditions will improve, and the way we look out for one another as neighbors is what truly gets us through situations like this together.”

Refuse and recycling collection will run one day later this week.

Residents also are reminded to bring pets indoors or ensure they have proper shelter, food and water. They also are asked to check on neighbors, especially older residents or those who may need help.
