The WPIAL basketball steering committee will meet Feb. 9 to determine playoff seedings and pairings for the playoffs.

So far, five teams from Westmoreland County are headed to the postseason, with more likely on the way.

Teams that have clinched so far include Norwin in Class 6A, Penn-Trafford and Latrobe in 5A, Belle Vernon in 4A and Greensburg Central Catholic in 3A.

Shootout at Saint Vincent

The new Shootout at Saint Vincent, formerly the Shootout at Seton Hill, will be Saturday and Sunday at SVC’s Carey Center.

The showcase features nine games — two girls and seven boys — with four Saturday and five Sunday.

An intriguing matchup Saturday is Bishop Guilfoyle vs. Greensburg Central Catholic at 6 p.m.

The other girls game is McKeesport vs. Franklin Regional at 4:30 Sunday.

Bishop Guilfoyle is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class A by TribLive. GCC is No. 2 in WPIAL 3A.

Penn-Trafford and Belle Vernon were on winning streaks heading into the week. The former had won 13 in a row, the latter nine straight.

GCC had won six of seven.

Pulling rank

Norwin remained No. 1 in the Trib HSSN Class 6A Top 5, while Penn-Trafford moved up a spot to No. 3 in 5A, Belle Vernon stayed at No. 4 in 4A, and GCC is still No. 2 in 3A.

Doesn’t matter

Norwin coach Brian Brozeski is glad his team is ranked No. 1 in WPIAL 6A, but just the same, he doesn’t care.

Rankings mean nothing to the veteran coach.

“To be honest, I didn’t know we were (No. 1),” he said. “That stuff is all garbage. I mean, look at Indiana (University football). They weren’t even ranked in the preseason.

“I mean, I get it. I would feel different if my team wasn’t in it. If it’s college basketball, college football, yeah, I am looking at the rankings. It just doesn’t mean anything.”

Sister act

Latrobe’s Maiers sisters have been working in tandem for the playoff-bound Wildcats.

There is only one Wildcat WWE-style belt to go around to the team’s player of the game, but they may want to make it a tag-team award.

Maggie and Morgan Maiers helped Latrobe to five wins in seven games, with two games in the spotlight.

When the Wildcats defeated West Mifflin, 63-48, Maggie had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Morgan chimed in with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

A week later, Latrobe beat McKeesport, 54-40, with both girls scoring 18. Morgan pulled down 19 rebounds and Maggie had 10.

Stealing the show

Penn-Trafford has a new steals queen.

Senior guard Torrie DeStefano broke the program record for career steals last week. The Seton Hill commit had six steals against West Mifflin to move ahead of Maura Suman, whose 255 takeaways put her at No. 1.

DeStefano had 11 points in the win. Teammate Izzie Fontana, meanwhile, scored 13 of her 18 in a hot-shooting second quarter.

Free wins

With Highlands shutting down its season due to a shortage of players, the Golden Rams must forfeit their remaining Section 1-4A games.

That means two county teams, Derry and Burrell, will each get a win.
