By the slimmest of margins, the Big 33 Football Classic’s Super Bowl streak survives for another year.

Imhotep Charter’s Yasir Durant is on injured reserve for the New England Patriots, but the offensive lineman’s presence on the roster has Big 33 organizers celebrating a 60-year streak. Every Super Bowl has included at least one alumnus from the historic high school football all-star game.

In 2016, Durant was chosen for a Pennsylvania team that defeated Maryland, 26-14.

According to Big 33 records, the streak started with Philadelphia native Herb Adderley playing in Super Bowl I as a member of the Green Bay Packers. Adderley took part in the inaugural Big 33 in 1957.

The all-star game’s rosters have included future Pro Football Hall of Famers Joe Namath, Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Jimbo Covert, Russ Grimm, Joe Montana, Jim Kelly, Curtis Martin, Ty Law, Marvin Harrison, Charles Woodson, Orlando Pace and Darrelle Revis among its Super Bowl players. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, not yet eligible for enshrinement in Canton, played in the 2000 Big 33 game when Ohio was Pennsylvania’s opponent.

A year ago, Philadelphia Eagles teammates Jahan Dotson (Nazareth) and A.J. Woods (Northwest) kept the Big 33’s Super Bowl streak alive, while the San Francisco 49ers’ Kevin Givens (Altoona) was the only player in 2024.

The Patriots play the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, Calif.

The Big 33 can thank a procedural move for the streak’s survival this year.

Durant signed with the Patriots in June but was lost a month later to an undisclosed injury in training camp. The Patriots waived the 27-year-old with an injury designation, he cleared waivers and reverted to the team’s injured reserve, where he spent the entire season.

He played in the United Football League last spring for the champion DC Defenders and earned All-UFL honors.

The Philadelphia native made 33 starts at Missouri and entered the NFL in 2020 as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs. He appeared in 11 games his rookie season with one start. He played seven games with the Patriots in 2021 and later spent time with New Orleans and Denver.

In high school, Durant was a starter for an Imhotep Charter team that won the 2015 PIAA Class 3A title over Erie’s Cathedral Prep. Rated as a three-star prospect, Durant spent one season as Arizona Western prior to Missouri.

This is the third time in five years that only one player on the Super Bowl rosters had Big 33 roots. Clairton’s Tyler Boyd kept the streak alive in 2022 as a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

This year’s Big 33 game is May 24.
