A 55-year-old man died at the Allegheny County Jail Sunday morning, Warden Trevor Wingard announced.
The man, whose name was not released, was booked into the jail on Aug. 2 on charges of simple assault and harassment.
Correctional staff found him unresponsive in his cell shortly after 7:30 a.m., Wingard said in a statement.
Jail healthcare personnel performed lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. He was declared dead shortly after 8 a.m.
The jail has notified the man’s family.
The jail will conduct an internal review and Allegheny County Police are investigating, according to Wingard’s statement.
