Sen. Dave McCormick seems to think that killings and kidnappings on the streets of a major U.S. city aren’t “irresponsible” but objecting to them is. He says he wants a full investigation, but has missed that ICE is apparently actively blocking Minneapolis police from investigating these crimes, and that federal officials were lying about the victims before their blood was even cold (in a Minnesota January!).
If the senator wants all the facts to come out, then he must do his job and insist that ICE and President Trump cooperate with an independent investigation.
Sen. John Fetterman at least sees the problem, but ignores the fact that he can do something about it. He can withhold his vote and force a compromise that includes essential reforms, such as including an end to dragnet operations and racial profiling, protections for children and immigrants who are in the country legally, and real consequences for ICE agents who commit atrocities. Instead, he’s announced that he’s going to vote for extra funding even if he would prefer not to. This is not a principled stand. He’s surrendering all the leverage he has, in advance.
Our senators must act now to defend us.
