The Pittsburgh Steelers are replacing one Danny with another.

Danny Crossman, a former Pitt defensive back and veteran NFL assistant, is expected to join coach Mike McCarthy’s staff as special teams coordinator, according to an NFL Network report Monday. He would replace longtime Steelers assistant Danny Smith, who held the job for 13 seasons.

McCarthy’s staff is starting to take shape a little more than a week into his tenure.

A top candidate for offensive coordinator, New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien was expected to interview with the Steelers on Monday, according to NFL Network. Tolzien, a Green Bay Packers quarterback from 2013-15, has connections to McCarthy as a coach and player. He served five seasons as an assistant with McCarthy in Dallas.

McCarthy made his first big coaching hire last week by adding Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator. Graham, who worked with McCarthy as a Packers assistant, served as a coordinator in the NFL since 2019 with the Miami Dolphins, New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders.

In Crossman, the Steelers would add another coach with an established resume.

Crossman, 59, has coached 22 seasons at the NFL level, most recently as the Miami Dolphins special teams coordinator for six seasons from 2019-24. He also had stints with the Carolina Panthers (2003-09), Detroit Lions (2010-12) and Buffalo Bills (2013-18).

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired former Steelers special teams coach Danny Smith last month.
