#Earned – Following three straight Section 2-6A losses to Upper St. Clair, Hempfield and Central Catholic, Mt. Lebanon had dropped to the crowded middle of the pack in the section where there were no postseason guarantees.

However, Blue Devils coach Joey David leaned on his team’s leading scorer to come up big and pump life into the fading team.

Mission accomplished as a red-hot Liam Sheely has led Mt. Lebanon to three straight section wins and a return to third place behind co-section leaders Upper St. Clair and Central Catholic.

The red-hot run began with a home game against Canon-McMillan. The Blue Devils outscored the Big Macs in the second quarter 35-2 to pull away to the convincing victory, 71-34. Sheely led all scorers with 31 points.

In a showdown at Norwin last Tuesday, Sheely once again pumped in 31 points as the Blue Devils held on to beat the Knights, 55-51.

On Friday, Sheely failed to hit the 31-point trifecta, coming up oddly enough, three points short. The senior sharpshooter scored 28 points as Mt. Lebanon defeated visiting Connellsville, 61-56.

The win improved the Blue Devils to 7-5 in the section and 13-6 overall and clinched a playoff spot for Lebo.

Mt. Lebanon visits Imani Christian on Tuesday before hosting rival Mt. Lebanon on Friday to close out section play.

Sheely not only shines on the basketball court, but also in the classroom, where he has a 3.8 grade point average.

Three weeks ago, Sheely went over 1,000 points scored in his career in a victory over Imani Christian.

He has played basketball since second grade and outside of a few years of golf in elementary school, he has only played hoops.

While he is not sure what school he will attend in the fall, Sheely plans to continue his basketball career at the next level.
