Vishavdeep Singh, the Scott Township man detained by ICE agents in Plum on Wednesday, is being held in Northern Regional Correctional Facility and Jail near Moundsville, W.Va., according to ICE records.
Singh, 22, was detained at the office of District Judge Mike Doyle after, police say, he attempted to flee from a preliminary hearing for charges stemming from a November road rage incident.
ICE’s detainee locator lists Singh’s birthplace as India, but his immigration status remains unclear.
TribLive attempts to reach his family were unsuccessful.
Last November, Singh was charged with felony aggravated assault in Oakmont after, police say, he pointed a gun at fellow drivers as he sped through the borough.
The weapon later turned out to be an airsoft shotgun, police said. An airsoft gun is capable of shooting plastic pellets.
Singh arrived at his hearing Wednesday with Constable Daniel Sweeney, according to a criminal complaint filed against him.
Before the hearing, ICE agents told Sweeney they intended to take Singh into custody, but the agents agreed to wait until after the hearing to detain Singh upon Sweeney’s request, the complaint said.
It’s unclear why ICE sought Singh.
In the courtroom, Sweeney handcuffed Singh and told him he was detained, according to the complaint.
During a “verbal altercation,” the complaint states, Sweeney said something like “ICE is here.”
Singh pushed Sweeney out of the way and fled the courtroom toward the main exit, scuffling with Sweeney and another constable, Margareth Sweeney, before ICE agents took Singh into custody, according to the complaint.
Singh shoved Margareth Sweeney to the ground, causing her to hit her head during the incident, the complaint said.
He is now facing additional aggravated assault charges in Plum, according to court documents.
Doyle declined to comment on the incident that occurred in his courtroom. Singh’s defense attorney did not reply to a TribLive request for comment.
ICE also did not immediately respond to a TribLive request for comment.
