It’s a busy weekend for sports fans, with both the Olympics and the Super Bowl filling up the schedule. But it’s a busy weekend in Pittsburgh too.
Don’t forget to check out these events.
Monster Jam
This weekend, you won’t have to stay out on the frozen roads to see big trucks. Monster Jam will return to PPG Paints Arena for a show filled with huge, flashy vehicles, amazing stunts and tons of excitement.
See the most popular trucks, including Grave Digger, El Toro Loco and Sparkle Smash, as they perform gravity-defying stunts in the arena. An additional ticket for the pre-program Pit Party allows you to get up close and personal with the trucks, meet the drivers, get autographs and photos, and participate in activities.
Shows will be at noon Saturday and Sunday, with the Pit Parties beginning at 9:30 a.m. both days. For tickets and information, visit monsterjam.com.
Ghost Hounds
Rock and blues band Ghost Hounds is heading to the Byham Theater, Downtown Pittsburgh, on Saturday to heat up the evening with their soulful songs. Fresh off their fifth studio album, the acclaimed band will bring new music and fan favorites to the stage.
Along with Ghost Hounds, attendees will see featured artist Don Felder, formerly of the Eagles. He’ll play some of the legendary rock band’s classic hits.
The show begins at 7:30 p.m. To get your tickets, visit trustarts.org.
Lunar New Year Gala
Many people will celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year later in February, but this year’s Lunar New Year Gala will happen this weekend at the Pittsburgh Playhouse in Downtown Pittsburgh.
The gala will include a wealth of cultural activities for all ages. There will also be a main performance with music, dance, colorful costumes and more. Attendees will each also receive a free P.F. Chang’s appetizer card and kids’ meal voucher.
Free cultural activities will begin at 4 p.m., with the main performance starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. To buy tickets, visit playhouse.pointpark.edu.
Live Puppy Bowl
If football isn’t your thing, there’s always the Puppy Bowl. Viewers seem to love the Animal Planet staple in which adorable dogs romp around a miniature football field. But what about experiencing it in person?
The Dog Penn in the Strip District is providing a live version for the second year in a row with its Live Puppy Bowl on Saturday. Spectators can see adoptable pups from Paws Across Pittsburgh Rescue bark it out on the field — Team Fluff vs. Team Ruff. There will be drink specials, refreshments, a 50/50 raffle and more.
The event is 21 and is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff. To learn more, visit thedogpenn.com.
Blind Date with a Movie
Tired of arguing over what movie to see? Take your chances with this trip to the Rangos Giant Cinema at the Kamin Science Center for a mystery movie weekend.
The Science Center has revealed only that “our blind date movie is a beloved early aughts dramedy. It’s rated R, features an iconic comedian, and isn’t a film you want to miss.”
Any guesses? Trying to figure it out could be half the fun.
The movie will screens at 7 p.m. Saturday at the center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. Tickets are $12, $10 for members. To learn more and get yours, visit kaminsciencecenter.org.
