Trib HSSN basketball team of the week – Quaker Valley Quakers boys

Coaches – Mike Mastroianni (34th season)

Record – 17-3 overall, 10-0 and champions of Section 2-4A

#Earned – Sometimes a great season is born out of the pain from previous campaigns.

Over the course of the last two seasons, the Quaker Valley boys basketball program suffered through several key injuries, forcing them to limp into the postseason at far less than 100%.

First round losses in both the 2024 and 2025 playoffs helped set the stage for a brilliant season this year, one in which several Quakers players took advantage of the experience gained over the last two painful seasons.

One of the wounded a year ago was Zachary Washington. The senior guard leads the Quakers in scoring with an average of over 17 points per game.

In three section wins this past week, Washington led the way with 18, 25 and 16 points.

He is the lone senior starter.

Quaker Valley had already clinched the Section 2-4A crown when this past week began.

The Quakers first won at Beaver, 55-30, thanks to 16 points from sophomore Nicolas Cohen and 11 points from junior Sam Chapman.

The Quakers’ defense was on display in the game, allowing single-digit points in three of the four quarters. QV is second in 4A in team defense, allowing 44.8 points per game.

On Thursday, Quaker Valley fell behind host Avonworth after one quarter, 16-9. But the Quakers took control in the second quarter and won by 17 points.

The next night, section play concluded with a tight, 53-46 win over host Central Valley. Chapman scored 15 points and Cohen added 13.

Quaker Valley has won 10 straight games, finished undefeated in winning the section by four games, and heads into Monday’s regular season finale against Class 5A power Indiana with 17 wins in 20 games.

One of the highlights of the regular season for QV was when legendary coach Mike Mastroianni became the 14th coach in district history to pick up victory No. 600. He now sits at 612.

He also has his son, Michael, on the staff this year as Quaker Valley hopes to win the school’s third WPIAL boys basketball championship and second in four years.
