Authorities in Montgomery County charged Burrell High School’s boys basketball coach with stealing more than $246,000 from a nonprofit group where he formerly served as treasurer.

Michael Fantuzzo, 40, faces theft charges from allegations stemming from when he served as volunteer treasurer of the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association, a nonprofit that had been headquartered in Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, at the time.

Fantuzzo did not immediately respond to a TribLive call requesting comment. He was hired as Burrell’s varsity boys basketball head coach in 2019.

“It’s a personnel matter,” said Athletic Director Brian Ferra. “I really can’t get into that. But Coach Fantuzzo will not be coaching the team at this point in time.”

Ferra said current assistant and volunteer coaches will coach Burrell in the playoffs.

Superintendent Shannon Wagner declined comment.

Allegations against Fantuzzo came to light when a new board of directors for the nonprofit was elected last year and began a review of its finances, Montgomery County detectives wrote in a criminal complaint against Fantuzzo.

Through that review, the organization found questionable payments and withdrawals from its bank account and its credit card, the complaint said. Detectives allege that, between May 2021 and September 2025, Fantuzzo made unauthorized purchases of about $246,708, the complaint said.

The organization’s board questioned Fantuzzo about the payments, and he “admitted to them that he used association’s funds for personal expenses totaling $90,000, although he claimed that it was done accidentally,” the complaint said.

A review found that more than $128,000 was charged on the organization’s credit card for Fantuzzo’s personal use, including trips to Disney World, a North Carolina vacation rental, country club membership fees, purchase and installation of a hot tub, and property taxes, the complaint said.

More than $100,000 was used to make payments on four of Fantuzzo’s personal credit cards and a PayPal account, the complaint said.

Fantuzzo was arraigned Friday by District Judge Maureen C. Coggins in Montgomery County, who set bail at $100,000.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Feb. 17 before District Judge Jodi L. Griffis in Conshohocken.

In a statement, the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association said it was “heartened to learn of the arrest of Michael Fantuzzo in the theft of nearly $250,000 over several years from our organization.”

“It was deeply troubling to learn that Mr. Fantuzzo chose to abuse the trust we placed in him with respect to POTA’s financial accounts,” the statement said, in part. “We thank the detectives for their outstanding work in this case, and we will continue to work with them to see that justice is served in this case.”
