Man killed in Braddock fire identified

The man killed Friday in a Braddock house fire has been identified as 63-year-old Antwon Abram.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office named Abram in a report Monday.

Authorities say he initially escaped the fire, but went back inside the duplex on Elm Street to retrieve his belongings.

Abram was later found inside and pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was determined to be an accident caused by smoking.

Code Orange extended in Mon Valley

Parts of the Mon Valley are under a Code Orange air quality alert by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for the second day in a row.

The notice applies to Clairton, Glassport, Liberty, Lincoln and Port Vue.

Children, the eldery and those with respiratory issues are advised to stay inside as much as possible to avoid inhaling the elevated concentrations of fine particulate matter.

Most of these particles form because of industrial pollution. They can stagnate in the air because of certain weather conditions, like light winds or temperature inversions — the phenomenon where cold air traps warmer air below.

Affected residents and businesses are asked to limit fireplace and wood stove use as well as avoid open burning and the use of gas-powered outdoor equipment.

Pedestrian injured, driver flees from North Side collision, police say

Pittsburgh police apprehended a man they say struck a pedestrian with his vehicle Monday in the city’s North Side and then attempted to flee on foot.

Emergency responders were dispatched around 2:45 p.m. to the intersection of East Ohio and East streets after reports of a hit-and-run, according to police.

Medics took a male patient to a hospital in stable condition with unknown injuries.

The driver attempted to run away, but didn’t make it far, according to police. He was caught as he neared Tripoli Street, which is roughly a quarter-mile north of the scene.

Neither the driver nor victim were identified in an incident summary from police.

The investigation is ongoing.
