PNC and UPMC have given the city of Pittsburgh large donations to purchase city vehicles. Let’s give them a hand. But I have a better idea that would double or triple the size of their donations.

Make all nonprofits, large and small, in the city of Pittsburgh pay taxes instead. Most nonprofits do make a profit; some of them make many millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, the taxpayers help to provide services to these nonprofits — things like public transportation, police protection, road maintenance and public utilities.

It is time that nonprofits join the ranks of other taxpayers. They are becoming too heavy a load for the rest of us. It is time to pay up.
