Former nursing home worker charged with theft
An ex-employee of a nursing home in Pittsburgh’s Brighton Heights neighborhood is accused of buying more than $102,000 worth of food that was never served to residents.
Vincent Jones, 60, was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of theft and receiving stolen property.
Pittsburgh police said Jones spent nearly two years ordering expensive steaks, seafood and other fancy foods while working at Little Sisters of the Poor’s Sts. Peter and Paul Home. The facility, part of an international Catholic congregation, cares for low-income people age 65 and older.
His colleagues discovered suspicious invoices in August, police said, leading to an investigation and Jones’ arrest. A criminal complaint claims security camera footage shows him loading boxes from a food delivery truck into his personal vehicle.
Jones is free on his own recognizance as he awaits a March 5 preliminary hearing.
He did not have an attorney listed in court records. Jones did, however, give a statement to TribLive news partner WTAE over text.
“All I can say is I am not guilty of these charges,” he wrote.
Water main break in Dormont
Pennsylvania American Water said it’s working to repair a water main break on Strachan Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Banksville neighborhood, near the border with Dormont.
Water starting flowing onto the road early Friday morning. Crews have shut down Strachan and Potomac avenues as they work to repair the break, with a fix expected by the end of the day.
About 160 customers in both communities may experience low water pressure, discolored or cloudy water or nothing coming from their taps at all. Water that looks off should clear up after being run for three to five minutes.
Residents are asked not to approach crews while they work for safety reasons.
