Gwyneth Philips didn’t waste her first opportunity to start in net for the Team USA hockey team. Philips, a Shady Side Academy graduate and native of Athens, Ohio, made 20 saves to help the Americans blank Switzerland during group play at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Philips played collegiately with Northeastern and finished with a save percentage of .958. Team USA won Group A with a 4-0 record.

The Americans outscored their opponents by a combined 19 goals in their four wins to earn a spot in the knockout round.

Skirboll adds top time

Fox Chapel graduate Zoe Skirboll has continued to find success with the University of Virginia women’s swimming team. She finished with a time of 58.89 seconds in the 100 breaststroke during Day 2 of the Cavalier invite.

That was a top 20 time for the NCAA this season and ranks 10th all-time in school history. The Cavaliers also are undefeated as a team, compiling an 8-0 mark in dual meets. Virginia is ranked No. 1 in the country.

Yofan part of special ride

Fox Chapel graduate Eli Yofan is a 6-foot-2 senior reserve guard for the Miami (Ohio) men’s basketball team. The Redhawks are one of the biggest mid-major stories in college basketball this season. They have cracked the top 25 nationally and are off to a 24-0 start, including an 11-0 record in Mid-America Conference play.

Yofan, who went to Miami as a preferred walk-on, has appeared in one game this season. Yofan’s most active season with the Redhawks came in 2022-23, where he appeared in 17 games.

Wrestlers split

The Fox Chapel girls wrestling team beat Brockway but lost to Redbank Valley during a recent tri-meet. Fox Chapel is 3-6 in dual meets. Lauren Bachman, who picked up a forfeit against the Rovers, leads the Foxes with an 18-10 record.

Lilah Rivera is second on the team in wins, setting a new career high with 15. She was 9-20 during her first two seasons but has improved to 15-8 as a junior. Emma Srodes also has picked up 13 wins so far this season.

WPIAL gymnast

Fox Chapel’s Ilaria Conte competed in the Intermediate II division at the WPIAL gymnastics championships. She scored a 8.38 on the vault and a 7.9 on the floor routine.
