One person was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after being shot during an exchange of gunfire with police in Lower Burrell.
Police say the incident began around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when residents of Rodgers Drive reported a man firing shots into a nearby home. Rodgers Drive is a dead-end residential street off of Leechburg Road near Glen’s Custard.
When police arrived, they say the suspect exited his home and began yelling at police, including a plea to “just shoot me,” according to statement released by Lower Burrell police late Saturday.
The police statement did not identify the suspect.
The Westmoreland County SWAT unit then responded and surrounded the suspect’s residence. SWAT members tried to contact the suspect but he did not respond, according to police.
During the standoff, which lasted more than three hours, police say the suspect fired multiple shots through a window at SWAT members. They returned fire, striking the suspect, who was then taken into custody, ending the standoff shortly before 10 p.m.
The suspect was taken by ambulance to a landing zone, where the suspect was taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.
The suspect’s condition was not known late Saturday, police said.
No police officers were injured.
During the incident, neighbors said police could be heard using a loudspeaker, instructing the suspect to exit the home with his hands in the air. Police said they had a warrant for the person’s arrest.
Several loud bangs, possibly flash-bang grenades, were heard near the home, with a flurry of activity about 9:50 p.m., more than three hours after the incident began. Shortly after that, an ambulance arrived and was seen leaving the area with a police escort.
