Seven wrestlers at Quaker Valley qualified for the WPIAL tournament.

The qualifiers from the Class 2A Northern Section tournament were seniors Bruce Anderchak (121) and Matt Danna (160), juniors Trey Dunlap (189) and Harper Sipes (145), freshmen Angel Perez (285) and Jake Neff (172) and sophomore Damien McClay (133).

“I think that the team performed very well,” said Dunlap, who won the section title. “We had four finalists and three champions and a number of underclassmen who outperformed expectations and qualified for the WPIAL tournament.

“I definitely went into sections with the goal of taking first place. I trusted that my training and mindset would help me achieve my goal. I go into every tournament with the mindset that I’m there to win it. I knew the competition would be tough, but I’m blessed to have great coaches that prepare me for these matches.”

The near- and long-range futures look promising for the QV grappler.

“My goals going forward are to compete for the WPIAL title and qualify for states,” Dunlap said. “Looking back, it’s incredible to see how much progress I’ve made in a year. It just speaks to my coaching and the work that I put in in the offseason.”

Home cooking

Quaker Valley’s boys basketball team finished with an 18-3 regular-season record and reeled off an 11-game winning streak that started Jan. 6 against Hopewell.

The Quakers played just seven times at home prior to the WPIAL playoffs — and won all seven games.

The QV girls saw their home floor only eight times in 22 games and posted a 7-1 record at their high school gym.

Another factor on the QV schedule in 2025-26 was that both the boys and girls teams traveled to Orlando at the end of December to participate in the KSA holiday tournament.

Home again

The Sewickley Academy boys basketball team played 11 home games at Win Palmer Court along with two at the nearby Rize Sports Complex.

The Panthers racked up a 21-1 record in the regular season after winning 21 consecutive games.

Sewickley Academy’s girls team did not host a home game until Dec. 15 but ended up competing nine times — and winning six — at Win Palmer Court. The Panthers finished 13-9 in the regular season.

Down the season’s home stretch, Sewickley played four consecutive and five of six home games.

QV wins playoff opener

Senior guard/forward Mimi Thiero hit for 30 points Feb. 13 to power No. 4 Quaker Valley to a 50-36 victory at home over No. 13 Keystone Oaks in the WPIAL Class 3A girls basketball first round.

Sophomore guard Keira Watson added 11 points for the Quakers (17-6), who met No. 5 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals.

Natalee Tortorella scored 14 points and Hannah York had 11 for the Golden Eagles (12-10).

Retirement plans

Mike Iuzzolino, Sewickley Academy’s boys basketball coach, was honored Feb. 14 by Saint Francis University in a pregame ceremony.

Iuzzolino (No. 42) and former teammate Joe Anderson (No. 44) had their SFU jersey numbers retired and placed in the gym rafters at the ceremony.

“It was very nice,” Iuzzolino said.
