A portion of Mt. Troy Road Extension in Ross will be closed for about four months for work related to repair of a landslide, the Allegheny County Department of Public Works announced Feb. 23.
The 4500 block of Mt. Troy Road Extension will close at 9 a.m. March 9. The closure is expected to end in late June, but a date for the road’s reopening is not known at this time, public works spokesman Brent Wasko said.
The closure is needed for construction of a retaining wall and embankment, roadway repairs and installation of guardrail and pavement markings, public works said. Carmen Paliotta Contracting of South Park is the primary contractor for the $1.9 million project.
Wasko said public works discovered in September 2014 that the slope was beginning to slide. By 2016, it began affecting the side of the road, and by spring 2019 the slope had moved enough to warrant installation of barriers to keep drivers safe and prevent the slope from sliding further until a retaining wall could be built.
“This project has been in design for several years,” he said. “The start of construction was pushed back a couple of times due to slope movement decreasing after installation of the barriers, required utility relocations and funding needing to be used at more severe landslides along roads with higher traffic.”
Nearly 400 vehicles travel Mt. Troy Road Extension daily. Traffic will be detoured using Mt. Troy Road.
Residents who live within and near the closure area will have access to their homes at all times.
