Saint Vincent senior Jacob Dzurica left an indelible mark on his final appearance at the PAC Championships.
The Hempfield graduate won the 50-yard freestyle, setting a conference record in prelims with a time of 19.72 seconds.
He won the event in 20.08 seconds.
Dzurica didn’t stop there as he also won the 100 freestyle in 44.07 seconds.
Freshman William Schauss won his first PAC title, taking the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.47 and the 1,650 free in 16:44.73.
Schauss was named the PAC Newcomer of the Year, while the Bearcats’ Josh Gurekovich was selected as the conference coach of the year.
Senior Rachel Hutchinson also was a conference champion in the 500-yard freestyle. She finished second in the 1,650 freestyle in 18:13.14.
Men’s basketball
Mount Aloysius: Sophomore Fin Hutchison (Franklin Regional) has played in 23 games for the Mounties, averaging 17.9 minutes, with nine starts. Hutchison is averaging 5.7 points and is second in the team in 3-point field goals with 24.
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats (21-4, 13-3) clinched the No. 2 seed in the AMCC Tournament with a 110-97 victory over Bradford as senior Trent Rozich scored 24 points, senior Jackson Byer had 20 and senior Michael Bigley pitched in 16 points and seven assists.
Saint Vincent: SVC clinched the No. 4 seed in the PAC South Division for the conference tournament. The Bearcats (16-9) will play at No. 1 Westminster at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Seton Hill: The Griffins (14-12, 8-10 PSAC), battered by injuries, snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 67-59 victory over Slippery Rock. Junior Kedrick Curtis had 18 points and 12 rebounds and junior Camden Brewer added 17 points. Curtis was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Women’s basketball
Allegheny: Sophomore Ava Kobus (Norwin) scored 20 points, on 10-for-11 shooting, grabbed nine rebounds and added four assists in a 65-52 victory over Hiram. The Gators improved to 13-12 overall and 10-6 in the PAC.
Clarion: Freshman Kendall Berger (Norwin) scored 20 points, two off her season high, and pulled down eight rebounds in 32 minutes as the Golden Eagles fell to Slippery Rock, 78-72.
Holy Family: Sophomore Lauren Palangio (Norwin) is averaging 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. She has four double-figure scoring games, including 12 (4 for 4 FG) and 10 rebounds against Jefferson. Holy Family is 23-3 overall and 18-0 in the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference. The Tigers received votes but were not ranked in the latest WBCA Top 25 poll.
Penn State Behrend: Junior guard Lily Palladino (Penn-Trafford) had 15 points, making three 3-pointers and going 6 for 6 from the foul line, in an 83-71 win over Mount Aloysius.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats will take a five-game winning streak into the PAC Tournament. They will be the No. 1 seed from the PAC South Division and host No. 4 Westminster at 7 on Tuesday night.
SVC rallied to get past Chatham, 56-52, in the regular-season finale as junior guard Olivia Yancy scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and sophomore Emerson Peffer had 12. The Bearcats (19-6, 14-2) outscored the Cougars 20-5 in the fourth quarter. They trailed 47-36 after three quarters.
Senior Alyssa Laukus (Norwin) had 16 points for Chatham.
Seton Hill: Junior Hailee Ford scored a career-high 27 points, senior Helene Cowan added 21 and senior Hallie Cowan had 20 as the Griffins (17-7, 13-5 PSAC) defeated Slippery Rock, 98-71.
USC Upstate: Redshirt sophomore Emma Blair (Latrobe) had nine points on 4-for-4 shooting and grabbed five rebounds in a 63-57 loss to UNC Ashville.
Men’s volleyball
Grove City: Junior Andrew Kessler (Penn-Trafford) dropped six kills and junior Carson Good (Penn-Trafford) added five in a 3-0 loss to Thiel.
Good and Kessler matched kill totals with 10 apiece in a 3-1 loss to Saint Vincent. Sophomore Keith Otto had 10 digs.
Saint Vincent: Senior opposite hitter Shawn McSwiggen reached 1,000 kills for his career as the Bearcats defeated Grove City, 3-1. McSwiggen had 19 kills, while senior outside hitter Zebadiah Wyant added 15.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Brooke Street was named the AMCC Bowler of the Week. She led the field in the team’s second round-robin tournament of the season with 1,243 pins in six games (207.2 average). She was 14 for 14 in single-pin spares as SVC went 5-1 in the event and clinched the No. 1 seed for the AMCC Championship.
Softball
Kent State: Freshman pitcher Riley Miller (Hempfield) is 5-3 in eight starts — 12 appearances overall — with a 5.40 ERA and 1.75 WHIP. She leads the Golden Flashes’ staff with 22 strikeouts.
Pitt-Greensburg: After winning its first AMCC title, UPG was picked by conference coaches as the preseason favorite to repeat. The Bobcats, who finished 21-19 overall and 10-6 in the AMCC, bring back junior catcher Jessica Dunn (.315, 16 RBI), a first-team all-conference pick, and sophomore infielder Shelby Cloak (.330, 24 RBI), the AMCC Newcomer of the Year.
Seton Hill: Sophomore Abby DeJidas had three hits and sophomore Shelby Telegdy tossed a complete-game five hitter as the Griffins (1-2) blanked West Virginia Wesleyan, 5-0, for their first win of the season.
Baseball
Clarion: Grad student Zach Kelly (Penn-Trafford) was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. He allowed one run in four innings against Central Penn in his season debut. He finished with five hits and three strikeouts in an 11-6 win.
Seton Hill: Senior Colin Ahr had two hits and junior Gage Wheaton (Hempfield) and Junior Owen Mandler had two RBIs apiece as the Griffins defeated Charleston, 7-1.
They completed a two-game sweep with a 13-3 win in Game 2 as grad student Nate Dorinsky homered, Mandler went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Wheaton tripled and scored twice.
Seton Hill (5-1) has won three straight.
Men’s swimming
Grove City: Freshman Patrick Cratty (Latrobe) took third place in the 200 freestyle in 1:43.96 at the PAC Championships. He also was fifth in the 100 freestyle (48.22). Junior Charlie Cratty (Latrobe) was fifth in the 100 fly (53.21) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:00.76).
Washington & Jefferson: The 200-yard medley relay broke the school record for the second year in a row. Senior Nathaniel Harden (Hempfield) and sophomore Micah Lohr (Hempfield) were part of the achievement as the foursome finished in 1 minute, 34.76 seconds at the PAC Championships. They finished third. The 800 relay, which included junior Daniel Jeffries (Hempfield), also took third.
Jeffries swam with the second-place 200 free relay that broke an 11-year-old school record in 1:24.64. He then broke a school record in the 100 freestyle (46.83) and helped the 400 freestyle relay to a third-place finish in 3:09.96.
Harden, Lohr and Jeffries also took third with the 400 medley relay in 3:32.26, threatening a school record.
Lohr was third in the 100 butterfly (53.03).
Westminster: Grad student Gino Piraino (Franklin Regional) finished second in the 1-meter competition at the PAC Championships. He scored 337.83 points in the 11-dive event.
Women’s swimming
Westminster: Freshman Olivia Schrock (Hempfield) swam on the 400 medley relay that finished seventh at the PAC Championships.
Men’s track & field
Seton Hill: Senior Angelo Allen (shot put, weight throw), sophomore Gaige Grassmyer (400-meter run) and senior Kaden Crump (800) all won events at the Raider Tune-Up.
Women’s track & field
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert ran a school-record time of 4:59.45 in the mile at the Penn State National Tune-Up. Freshman Jane Huss (Derry) recorded a personal-best time of 2:25.93 in the 800.
Westminster: Sophomore Grace Iwig (Hempfield) tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 3.54 meters at the WGH PAC Tuneup in Warren, Ohio.
Men’s lacrosse
Saint Vincent: Senior midfielder Jonathan Nagy reached 100 career points as the Bearcats downed Westminster, 13-8.
Seton Hill: Redshirt senior Michael Coleman had three goals and two assists, senior Nate Hersbster added two goals and two assists and senior Will Cody made 12 saves in net as the Griffins (2-0) defeated Chestnut Hill, 14-6.
Women’s lacrosse
Saint Vincent: Makayla Kintner picked up her first win as the Bearcats’ coach as the team downed West Virginia Wesleyan, 12-8. Sophomore attacker Cara Dupilka (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored two goals in the victory.
Grad student Chloe Herring was named the PAC midfielder of the week. She had five goals, five ground balls, five caused turnovers and a draw control against West Virginia Wesleyan.
