Brendan Hyland, superintendent for the North Allegheny School District, is retiring at the end of the school year, pending approval from the school board.
His retirement is expected to be included on the March 11 school board agenda. If approved, his last day as superintendent at North Allegheny will be June 30.
Hyland was appointed superintendent of schools at North Allegheny in July 2023.
“Serving as your superintendent has been the greatest honor of my professional life. I can say without any hesitation that I loved every day being superintendent of NA,” Hyland said.
Before coming to North Allegheny, Hyland has served as superintendent of the Plum School District since 2018.
Hyland of Mt. Lebanon also served as the principal of North Allegheny Intermediate High School from 2007 to 2018.
Hyland and his wife, Tricia, who also is an educator, havef three children, Alyssa, Allie and A.J., according to his biography at northallegheny.org.
He and his family dedicated the past 35 years to public education, considering it a “calling,” he said. But their family is ready to begin a new chapter.
“While this decision brings mixed emotions, it also brings deep gratitude and a sense of fulfillment,” he said.
He leaves feeling confident that the district stands on solid ground, as noted in his announcement to staff.
“Our priorities are well defined, our work is coordinated and aligned, and we have developed meaningful momentum through strategic collaboration, partnership, integrity and a shared commitment to excellence,” he said in a letter to North Allegheny staff, adding he is sure “the best is yet to come.”
In an interview with Hyland when he was hired in 2023, he said spending time with family is a priority for him and his wife.
Hyland replaced former North Allegheny Superintendent Melissa Friez, who submitted her resignation in May 2023. She left to serve as superintendent of the Mt. Lebanon School District.
The next school board meeting will take place at 7 p.m. March 11 in the boardroom of the Central Administrative Offices at 220 Hillvue Lane.
