3 new officers hired
North Huntingdon will add three police officers to its department, pending their successful completion of pre-employment background, credit and drug screenings, as well as a psychological exam.
Township commissioners on Wednesday approved the hiring of Trevor Brough, Jack Packe, and Alexander Urbani.
Acting Chief Jay McCurdy said the new hires will bring the department’s total to approximately 30 officers.
Chili cook-off set for March 5
Chili and wing lovers can feast for a good cause at the Norwin Rotary Chili Cook-off & Wing Thing from 5 to 8 p.m. March 5. Proceeds benefit the Norwin Rotary’s Backpack/Gift Card Project, which supports students from food-insecure families at Sheridan Terrace Elementary School.
The cook-off will span four locations in downtown Irwin: Manor Grille, 200 Main St.; Colonial Grill, 333 Main St.; First United Methodist Church, 310 Oak St.; and Masonic Hall, 415 Main St.
This year features an inaugural competition between Norwin and Hempfield. The community that raises the most money will claim the Norwin vs. Hempfield Cook-off trophy, which will be awarded annually to the winner. Prizes will also be awarded for the best food; the competition is open to both amateur and professional cooks.

Norwin softball fundraiser
The Norwin Lady Knights softball team is hosting an “Egg My Yard” fundraiser. Players will decorate the yards of Norwin School District residents on Easter morning by hiding treat-filled plastic eggs.
Pricing is as follows:

• 50 eggs: $45
• 75 eggs: $60
• 100 eggs: $75
The deadline to order is April 3. The team is also accepting donations of plastic eggs, non-chocolate candy,and cash.

Norwin Art League scholarship
The Norwin Art League is accepting applications for its annual $1,000 scholarship, which is being presented this year in honor of Albert Froeschl to recognize his longtime support of the organization.
The scholarship is open to local high school students who plan to attend college and major in either a visual arts field or in art education with a focus on the visual arts.
Prospective applicants can obtain the necessary forms and a full list of requirements by visiting the Norwin Art League studio, 306 Main St., Irwin.

Norwin Public Library programs
A program on native wildflowers found at Braddock’s Trail Park will be held at 6 p.m. March 4 at the Norwin Public Library, 100 Caruthers Road, Irwin.
Representatives from the Braddock’s Trail wildflower walks will offer tips on how to identify flowers that bloom there. The park is located on Robbins Station Road in North Huntingdon.
The library also will host “Shamrock Roots,” an Irish heritage and genealogy program, at 6 p.m. March 10.
The session will explore Irish culture and provide a guide for Irish-Americans looking to trace their ancestral roots and plan heritage trips. Attendees will receive take-home materials to assist in their research.

St. Stephen church fish fry
St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Church, 90 Bethel Road, North Huntingdon, will hold its annual Lenten fish fry every Friday throughout the Lenten season, with the exception of Good Friday.
The fish fry will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A gluten-friendly option will be available.
Civil service vacancy
North Huntingdon officials are accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the township’s civil service commission.
The township commissioners on Feb. 18 accepted the resignation of Susan Casper from the commission.
Manor church to hold cooking classes
Refuge Church, 21 Broadway Ave., Manor, will host two free cooking classes to teach participants how to prepare three different soups.
Classes are from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 28 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 2.
There is no cost to participate, but those interested are encouraged to register in advance.

St. Agnes Church to hold fish fry
St. Agnes Church at St. Agnes Lane, North Huntingdon, will hold a drive-through fish fry on Fridays during Lent through March 13.
The fish fry will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. The church will have both baked and hand-breaded fried cod dinners, a fried cod sandwich, and traditional sides such as French fries, haluski and pierogi.
Cubcake fundraiser
Bakers are being sought to contribute cupcakes to the Norwin Lions Club’s 11th annual Cubcake Wars fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. March 1 at the Norwin High School cafeteria, 251 McMahon Drive.
The proceeds from the cupcake sale go to the charities supported by the Norwin Lions and the service organization’s Kitty Sack program, which provides food for Norwin elementary students to combat food insecurity.
In addition to the cupcake sale, there will be a gift basket auction.

Bushy Run Charter Day
Bushy Run Battlefield in Penn Township will host its annual Charter Day on March 8.
Charter Day recognizes the day in 1681 when William Penn received a grant of 26 million acres from English King Charles II — land that would become Pennsylvania. Attendees can explore the museum and speak with reenactors about the state’s history.
The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. in the museum, 1253 Route 993, and is free to attend. Cake, drinks and snacks will be served.
Cake decorating fundraiser
The Franklin Regional Panthers Against Cancer Club will host a March 7 cake decorating fundraiser at The Kitchen by Vangura, 14431 Vangura Lane in North Huntingdon.
The club is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through its Student Visionaries of the Year program. The cost is $75 and all proceeds go toward the club’s fundraising.

State police academy applications open
The Pennsylvania State Police is now accepting applications for its 2026 Law and Leadership Academy – Southwest Location. The application period runs through May 1.
The free program is designed for residents or students in Southwest Pennsylvania, ages 18 and older, who have a high school diploma or GED and are seeking a career in law enforcement. Modeled after professional police academies, the curriculum includes instruction on criminal investigations, traffic laws and police resources, alongside paramilitary training in physical fitness, swimming and marching.
The academy runs from May 11 through Aug. 5. Classes are held:
• Mondays: 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Wednesdays: 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Saturdays: Two dates (tentative)
The program aims to foster self-discipline and teamwork while giving participants a firsthand look at the cadet experience.

3 Rivers Psychic Fair set for March 14-15
The 3 Rivers Psychic Fair, featuring more than 55 vendors, returns from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14-15 at Comfort Inn, 699 Rodi Road, Penn Hills.
Workshops will be available on a variety of topics, including manifesting, authenticity, feminine rising, group psychic medium readings and telepathy.
The fair takes place three times a year in and around the city of Pittsburgh. The next events are scheduled for July 25 and Oct. 17-18. The fair offers psychic, intuitive and medium readings, as well as Reiki and energy healers and holistic products.

Heating assistance program enrollment
The federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, has opened enrollment for the season, offering one-time cash grants to qualifying applicants to help with home heating bills or emergency repairs.
