Parking lot credit card scam investigated at Shaler Giant Eagle
Shaler police are looking into reports that four men solicited donations Monday at the Butler Plank Road Giant Eagle parking lot in Shaler.
TribLive news parter WTAE reports police said they believe the men are part of an out-of-state theft ring.
The men allegedly sought donations by saying a relative of theirs had died and that they needed money for a funeral. The suspects requested credit card information using an app or scanning device to collect card numbers, rather than asking for cash, police said.
People who had donated around $20 or $30 found charges upward of $3,000 on their credit cards, police said.
State and federal authorities are also investigating.
