Two people were killed Thursday morning in a three-vehicle crash along Route 22 in Indiana County, that closed the highway for several hours, state police at Indiana said.
The two victims who were not identified by police, were in a Ford vehicle that traveled from Bowser Road in West Wheatfield onto Route 22, where their vehicle was hit around 8:30 a.m. by an eastbound garbage truck, police said. The Ford then was hit by a tractor-trailer.
The accident occurred near Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, about 4½ miles east of the intersection of routes 22 and 119 in Burrell Township.
The Indiana County Coroner was at the scene, police said. Coroner Jerry Overman could not be reached for comment.
The driver of the garbage truck was transported to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown and the driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to Indiana Regional Medical Center. Information on their identifies and their conditions were not available from police.
Police said they believe the driver of the Ford did not stop at a stop sign before driving onto Route 22.
By 4 p.m., the eastbound lanes of the highway were open, but the westbound lanes remained closed, according to Indiana County 911.
The investigation into the crash is continuing, with a state police forensics unit involved in the probe, police said. Firefighters and emergency medical services were at the scene as well.
