The clash between section co-champions in the WPIAL Class A girls basketball finals became more of a battle to overcome adversity.
In the end, Serra Catholic won the rubber game and more importantly district gold, edging Geibel Catholic, 47-46, Friday at the Petersen Events Center.
Gators leading scorer Emma Larkin had a chance to win it, but her driving baseline layup rolled around and bounced out with three seconds left.
The adversity for Geibel Catholic came Monday when after upending top-seeded Aquinas Academy in overtime, the celebration was short-lived when 6-foot-1 sophomore Mallory Clemmer broke her wrist while celebrating.
A team with a two-player bench had to go into the finals with just one player on the bench.
Then in the third quarter, Serra Catholic freshman Lexi Pearce, who scored all of her 17 points in the first half, had to be carted off with a knee injury.
She was able to rejoin her team after the game to celebrate gold in a wheelchair.
