Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania Troop 10328 recently met with Sharpsburg Mayor Kayla Portis and got a look at how local government works.
The Scouts took turns banging the gavel, asking Portis various questions and took t a tour of borough council chambers Feb. 25.
The visit was part of the girls’ efforts to earn their Inside Government badge, which is designed to teach youngsters what it means to be a citizen.
They learn about rights and responsibilities, laws and people who make the laws.
Portis posted about the experience on her Facebook page.
The mayor said the Scouts came prepared with thoughtful questions, and she enjoyed showing them around and explaining how everything works.
Scouts who participated in the visit were all Fox Chapel Area School District fourth graders and junior-level Girl Scouts.
Troop co-leader Melanie Linn Gutowski said the girls brainstormed their own questions and had a lot of fun at the borough building.
Gutowski is assisted by fellow troop leader Faith Berry.
