Highlands School District students raised a cool $3,990 for Special Olympics last week.

The Frozen Rams Student Team, organized by teacher Scott Silverman, participated in the Polar Plunge at Acrisure Stadium on Pittsburgh’s North Shore Friday.

Among 73 participating schools, Highlands ranked 12th in total fundraising.

More than three dozen students jumped into a pool of cold water, helping to crush last year’s fundraising total by nearly $1,000. Money supports the district’s Unified Bocce and Track teams.

“The team’s dedication helps support the incredible Unified Sports programs that allow our athletes to grow, compete and thrive,” according to a district post.

The regional fundraiser began in 2010 and is sponsored by Special Olympics Pennsylvania.

This year, the multi-day event brought in more than $1.2 million, according to organizers.
