A Hempfield man was charged this week with animal cruelty after Greensburg police said he took an injured parakeet to a bar.

Police said the bird, which had a broken leg and was underweight and weak, was taken to an emergency animal hospital, according to court papers.

Officers were called to Callaghan’s Bar on South Main Street around 8 p.m. Feb. 21 for a report of an intoxicated man at the bar with an injured parakeet. Authorities believe Timothy P. Grace, 40, transported the bird to the bar in his pocket, according to court papers.

He claimed the bird consumed marijuana and beer daily, police said.

The parakeet was taken to the animal hospital where it was given antibiotics and a splint was put on its broken leg, police said. Grace is charged with aggravated animal cruelty, transporting animals in a cruel manner and related offenses.

He had not been arraigned and a phone number for him could not be located. An attorney was not listed in court records. No court action was scheduled.
