The Pittsburgh Pirates traded right-handed reliever Kyle Nicolas to the Cincinnati Reds for infielder/outfielder Tyler Callihan.
Callihan, 25, is ranked the Reds’ No. 19 prospect by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder made his major league debut April 30 and went 1 for 6 in four games.
A 2019 third-round draft pick, Callihan batted .262/.332/.417 in six minor league seasons. Last year, with Triple-A Louisville, he hit .303/.410/.528 with four home runs and six stolen bases in 24 games.
The 27-year-old Nicolas, a Massillon, Ohio, native, was 3-4 with a 4.68 ERA and 1.48 WHIP and averaged 8.8 strikeouts and 4.9 walks per nine innings in 98 innings over 86 appearances in three seasons with the Pirates. Nicolas is playing for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic.
