A man suspected of stealing guns led authorities Wednesday on a brief car chase in Downtown Pittsburgh that ended with him jumping into the Monongahela River and later being arrested.
Police said they tried to pull over the man while he was driving at Wood Street and Forbes Avenue around 4 p.m.
The driver was suspected of stealing guns from a Downtown parking garage earlier Wednesday, police said.
The man sped away and officers stopped chasing the vehicle, police said. Allegheny County sheriff’s deputies took over, following the vehicle over the Fort Pitt Bridge, police said.
Police said the man then turned onto West Carson Street and struck a pole near Station Square in the city’s South Side neighborhood.
The suspect then ran from the vehicle and jumped into the river, police said. He later pulled himself out of the water and was arrested.
Charges are pending.
A Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Thursday declined to provide additional details about the incident.
Police did not name the suspect.
