Pittsburgh Penguins forward Justin Brazeau will be scratched for Sunday’s game against the Boston Bruins at PPG Paints Arena due to an undisclosed injury.
The team announced his status Sunday afternoon and labeled him as “day to day.”
In 48 games this season, Brazeau has recorded career highs in goals (16), assists (14) and points (30) while averaging 12:56 of ice time per contest.
Brazeau has played in 37 consecutive games. That is the seventh-longest such streak on the team.
With Brazeau unavailable, forward Elmer Soderblom is scheduled to make his debut with the Penguins.
Coach Dan Muse announced Soderblom’s status approximately two hours before the opening faceoff.
The Penguins acquired Soderblom in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2026.
In 39 games this season, Soderblom has scored three points (two goals, one assist) while averaging 10:41 of ice time per contest.
Soderblom was a healthy scratch during Saturday’s 4-3 home shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers as he traveled to Pittsburgh.
Notes:
• Penguins rookie goaltender Arturs Silovs is scheduled to start Sunday’s game. In 29 games this season, Silovs has a 13-8-8 record, a 2.80 goals-against average, an .899 save percentage and two shutouts.
Silovs has played the Bruins once in his career. As a member of the Vancouver Canucks, he made 32 saves on 34 shots in a 3-1 home loss Feb. 25, 2023.
• Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin is serving the second contest of a five-game suspension.
• Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has 799 career points.
• Penguins defenseman Sam Girard has 198 career assists.
• Penguins forward Rickard Rakell has 298 career assists.
• With the game scheduled to start shortly after 4:30 p.m., neither team staged a morning skate.
• The Bruins are scheduled to start goaltender Joonas Korpisal. In 24 games this season, Korpisalo has an 11-9-2 record, a 3.20 goals against average, an .893 save percentage and one shutout.
That solitary shutout came at the expense of the Penguins. During a 1-0 home win on Jan. 11, Korpisalo made 27 saves.
• Marco Sturm, a former NHL All-Star winger, is in his first year as head coach of the Bruins. During the 2018 offseason, as he began to take his first steps as a coach, Sturm was invited as a guest coach for the Penguins’ development camp in Cranberry.
The invitation came from former Penguins assistant general manager Bill Guerin.
“It was great,” Sturm said before today’s game. “I had a great time here. Got to meet people from the organization. Also players, a guy like Sid. He was not (participating in) development camp but he was working (out) every day. So, it was nice to see him and chat with him.
“It was just a great experience. As a player, you don’t see that kind of stuff. At that time, I wanted to learn as much as I can. These guys here, they treated me well and it helped me a lot.”
• The scheduled referees are Francois St. Laurent (No. 8) and Peter MacDougall (No. 38), while the linespersons are Tyson Baker (No. 88) and Kilian McNamara (No. 93).
