Authorities took a man into custody Monday morning after he crashed his car into another vehicle during a “domestic incident” in Clairton, then began assaulting the other driver, according to Allegheny County Police.

Police said they were dispatched around 8:05 a.m. to the intersection of 5th Street and St. Clair Avenue. Two vehicles were involved in the crash and multiple people were injured.

The man in custody, who authorities have not named, assaulted the second driver until a bystander intervened and stopped the attack, police said.

First responders took multiple victims to area hospitals in stable condition: the second driver, a passenger in the second driver’s vehicle and a boy who was a passenger in the suspect’s car, police said.

A police spokesman would not comment Monday about whether the man planned or intended to hit the second vehicle.

“I’m not able to speak to the suspect’s intentions at this point,” Jim Madalinsky, the police spokesman, told TribLive.

Officers from the county police’s general investigations and homicide units responded to the scene.

“Homicide detectives investigate more than fatalities,” Madalinsky said. “The severity of the incident often dictates which unit responds. In this case it was both. Homicide also handles collision reconstruction.”

Detectives are consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office to determine charges, Madalinsky said.
