Greensburg Central Catholic coach Chris Skatell has matched wits with former college stars before. Shady Side Academy coach Jonna Burke, for instance, starred at Pitt.
But GCC (21-7) will go against a two-time NBA champion Friday night in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals.
Trinity (23-2), the District 3 champion from Camp Hill, is coached by Norris Cole, who won back-to-back titles with the Miami Heat in 2012 and ‘13.
Cole, a former point guard, is in his first year coaching the Shamrocks. He also played with the New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder over his seven-year NBA career and only missed the playoffs once.
The Cleveland State alum was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round in 2011. He is a native of Dayton, Ohio.
Gribble takes 3rd
GCC star guard Erica Gribble scored 13 points in the state second round to reach 2,330 career points, moving her past former Southmoreland standout Vanessa Abel (2,327) for third all-time among girls scorers in Westmoreland County.
Gina Naccarato (3,364) and Charel Allen (3,110), both of Monessen, have the top two spots.
Tarpley stands out
A.J. Tarpley, who left Greensburg Central Catholic for The Kiski School, was named the Most Outstanding Player this season at his new school.
The 6-foot-3 junior point guard averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Cougars.
Tarpley plans to play one more year at Kiski School as he aims for a college career.
He played his freshmen season at Greensburg Salem.
Quick change
After a playoff season in basketball, Mt. Pleasant junior Ryleigh Drzal is ready to hit the recruiting trail as she eyes a college tennis career.
Drzal emerged as the leading scorer in basketball with a 14.5-point average.
But tennis is her main game. She will likely be the No. 1 singles player next season for the Vikings.
In two tennis seasons, she is 20-4 in singles and 12-2 in doubles. She lost in the WPIAL 2A singles quarterfinals as a junior.
Drzal has plans to visit Division II and III schools before the next fall season.

Penn Hills coach Chris Giles reached a milestone when the Indians defeated Meadville, 58-45, in the PIAA Class 5A first round.
