Duquesne senior guard Tarence Guinyard has earned another first-team honor.

Guinyard on Wednesday was named to the all-Atlantic 10 Conference first team, the first Dukes player to accomplish the feat since Damian Saunders in 2010, a span of 16 seasons.

The award comes a year after Guinyard earned first-team honors in the Ohio Valley Conference while at UT Martin.

Junior Jimmie Williams, Guinyard’s backcourt mate at Duquesne, earned A-10 third-team honors.

“It’s good to see, from a former guard, in playing that position — it’s good to see their development,” said Duquesne coach Dru Joyce III, an Akron product who played 12 professional seasons abroad. “Guards come in a variety of ways, but good guards play good floor games, and both of these guys are versatile players.”

They will lead No. 7 Duquesne (17-14) against No. 10 Rhode Island (16-15) in an A-10 Tournament first-round game at 5 p.m. Thursday at PPG Paints Arena.

The 6-foot-2 Guinyard is in his first season at Duquesne after transferring from UT Martin

“From start-to-finish, there’s a consistency to Tarence’s game that can’t be mistaken,” Joyce said. “It didn’t just turn up at one point in the season. He didn’t just all-of-a-sudden pour it on. He was in good form from game 1.”

In 30 games this season, Guinyard, a Tampa, Fla., native, leads Duquesne in scoring (16.9 ppg) while also owning a team-high 142 assists (4.7 apg). He is shooting 45.9% (162 for 353), including 36.6 (68 for 186) from 3-point range and ranks second on the team in steals (38).

Williams, a native of Solon, Ohio, is the first Duquesne player to earn a spot on the all-conference third team since former Highlands star Micah Mason in 2016.

The only member of the Dukes to start all 31 games this year, Williams is averaging 15.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and leads the team in steals (47). He also is shooting 46.1% (166 for 360).

During the regular season, Williams posted a double-figure scoring streak of 20 games, the longest by a Duquesne player in 15 years.

Saint Louis senior forward Robbie Avila, who led the Billikins to a share of the A-10 regular-season championship with VCU, was named A-10 Player of the Year.

Saint Joseph’s Steve Donahue was named Coach of the Year in his first season with the Hawks.

Joining Guinyard on the first team was Javon Bennett of Dayton, Derek Simpson of Saint Joseph’s and Lazar Djokovic and Terrence Hill Jr. of VCU.
