Imani Christian Academy and Propel Charter have played football together as part of a co-operative agreement for the past four seasons under the Imani Christian name.

On Monday, Propel Schools announced it will now serve as the host school, starting next fall.

Propel will assume full leadership of the program and will align it with the charter school network’s educational philosophy, the schools said in a news release.

“This moment represents years of dedicated growth and unwavering commitment from our scholars and staff,” coach LaRoi Johnson said in a statement. “As the host school, we now possess the ability to build a football program rooted in discipline, accountability and opportunity for every scholar-athlete. We are building more than just a team; we are building future leaders.”

Imani Christian finished 12-1 last season and won the Class 3A Allegheny 7 Conference title at 6-0. The Saints lost to Avonworth in the WPIAL championship game at Acrisure Stadium.

Propel will be the only charter school in Southwestern Pennsylvania to operate its own varsity football program.

“This transition reflects Propel’s continued investment in scholar-athletes and in creating dynamic spaces where students can truly thrive academically, socially and competitively,” Propel Schools CEO/superintendent Tina Chekan said. “Athletics are a critical component of how we cultivate confident, capable leaders who are ready to make a meaningful difference in the world.”

Propel will oversee program management, scheduling, facilities coordination and long-term development for the football co-op.
