For this year’s YMCA Healthy Kids Day in Bethel Park, everyone is invited.
For the first time, the Y’s Spencer Family branch on Church Road is teaming up with St. Clair Health to expand the scope of the free event, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18.
“It is our goal to try to establish good partner relationships in the community, and this seemed like a natural fit for us,” branch executive director Jim Lybarger said.
St. Clair’s involvement allows Healthy Kids Day to expand its offerings in promoting physical and mental well-being for people of all ages.
“This serves as an opportunity for community members to meet a lot of our providers in the specialties we offer, away from the office, away from maybe where they’re sometimes fearful,” said Lindsay Meucci, St. Clair vice president of marketing, communications and advocacy.
The day will feature numerous activities for youngsters inside and outside the building, including a touch-a-truck session in the parking lot. Parents can have their children’s car seats checked for safety, courtesy of the Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Company.
Resources for adults include screenings, evaluations and plenty of information about what both the YMCA and St. Clair Health have to offer. For example, dietitians from the medical center will be at the event.
“They’ll have samples and recipes, and based on people’s screening results, perhaps they can talk to them about how to change (their) diet or get some tips to live better,” Meucci said.
Visitors can learn about YMCA programs such as the Active at Any Age for seniors, strength-building family boot camps and Livestrong, a wellness initiative for adult cancer survivors.
YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh launched a Veterans Wellness Program last year, with the Spencer Family branch serving as the pilot site. Conducted in 12-week cohorts during which participants work with the Y’s healthy living team, the program is open to people of any age who served and includes free use of the facility for the duration.
“We’ve found that a lot of the veterans who have taken advantage of this are still coming in,” Lybarger said. “They connect and meet, and it’s a great opportunity. It’s very fulfilling for us, as staff, to see that.”
From St. Clair’s perspective, Healthy Kids Day represents part of an overall preventive effort.
“We’re making sure people are aware of the ages that they’re supposed to get a mammography or their prostate screening or colonoscopies,” Meucci said, “and making sure people are staying on top of their wellness, versus maybe being too busy to get it.”
