Payton Newman erupted for 29 points to lead Neshannock to a 61-56 victory over Kennedy Catholic in the PIAA Class 2A girls basketball quarterfinals Friday night, giving Lancers coach Luann Grybowski her 800th career win.
Newman went 9 for 10 from the free-throw line and Jaidon Nogay and Sophia Bonner each scored eight points for Neshannock (25-3), which will meet District 6 champ Bishop McCort in the semifinals Monday.
Tori Harvey scored 27 and Meyah Joseph added 11 for District 10 runner-up Kennedy Catholic (24-3).
Dallastown 54, Canon-McMillan 39 – Denyla Handy scored 22 points and Ava Jamison added 19 to lead District 3 runner-up Dallastown (26-3) in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Madison Clair scored 16 points to lead Canon-McMillan (23-5). Dallastown will face Altoona in the semifinals Monday.
Shady Side Academy 59, Central Cambria 32 – Leah Buford hit for 20 points to lead WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (26-2) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Karis Thomas and Laila Banner each had nine for the Bulldogs, who will get a rematch with Greensburg Central Catholic in the semifinals Monday. Katie George scored 13 to lead District 6 champ Central Cambria (22-7).
Boys basketball
Carver Engineering & Science 68, North Catholic 61 – Fareed Brown scored 23 points and Carver Engineering & Science (23-6) pulled away to win a Class 4A quarterfinal that was tied 61-61 with 2:30 to play. Billy Hennigan added 17 and Sahib Rodriguez had 15 for Carver, which will meet Obama Academy in the semifinals Monday. Jude Rottmann scored 28 points, including six 3-pointers, and Jason Fredericks hit five 3s and finished with 23 points for North Catholic (21-7).
Neighborhood Academy 81, Conestoga Christian 39 – Kedron Gilmore scored 24 points and WPIAL champion Neighborhood Academy (24-3) rolled past Conestoga Christian (16-12) in the Class A quarterfinals. Dante Wright added 18 and Elijah Cunningham had 11 for the Bulldogs, who will take on District 9 champ Elk County Catholic in the semifinals Monday. Josh Boutough scored 11 to lead Conestoga Christian.
West York 59, Moon 53 – Chase Cristofoletti and Conrad Beatty scored 16 points each as District 3 champ West York (23-1) held off a comeback bid from Moon (22-5) in the Class 5A quarterfinals. West York will meet Chartiers Valley in the semifinals Monday.
