Fox Chapel graduate Rowan Gwin has etched his name in the record books for the indoor track team at Appalachian State University. The sophomore runner ran the 8,000-meter run in 8 minutes, 5.08 seconds to break a 15-year-old school record during an event at Boston University.
He broke the mark of 8:05.88 set by Chris Moen in 2011.
Bulldogs bow out
The Shady Side Academy boys basketball team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the state playoffs. The Bulldogs were knocked out by the District 6 runner-up Forest Hills.
The Rangers opened the game by scoring the first nine points and were able to pick up a 58-39 win. Shady Side Academy was the fourth-place team out of the WPIAL.
The Bulldogs played without center Cam Mallory, who missed with an ankle injury. Shady Side Academy missed its first six shots to open the game and had turnover issues.
Willis Price led the Bulldogs by scoring 12 points in the second half. Shady Side Academy wrapped up its season with a 10-17 record.
Fox Chapel girls make exit
The Fox Chapel girls basketball team was happy to return to the PIAA Class 5A playoffs after a long absence from the state tournament. Fox Chapel would have liked to stay in the fight longer but couldn’t get its offense going in a 61-30 loss to District 3 champion York Suburban.
Lyla Jablon and Nina Kulikowski scored 10 points apiece for the Foxes.
Abdelsalam in regionals
Fox Chapel graduate Youssef Abdelsalam recently competed at the NCAA Super Regional at East Stroudsburg University. The Seton Hill freshman dropped both of his matches but got his first taste of the postseason competition.
The Griffins sent four wrestlers to nationals, including three former WPIAL competitors: Jacob Houpt (Canon-McMillan), Ty Linsenbigler (Hempfield) and Mike Zacur (Thomas Jefferson).
SSA drops title game
Academie Ste Cecile won the GLPHL championship with a 7-0 victory over Shady Side Academy. The Stallions got off to a 5-0 lead in the first period against the Bulldogs and were able to hold on and win their second consecutive final.
