LEWISBURG — The final day of PIAA Class 2A swimming Saturday will have several WPIAL competitors in the evening’s championship finals.
Indiana junior Joshua Reed returned to the pool this morning in the preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle and placed third with a time of 46.99.
Northgate senior Sam Cavanaugh, Friday’s boys 200 individual medley champion, will go after gold again as the top seed in the 500 free (4:34.52). Quaker Valley junior Marcus Zhan will join Cavanaugh in the championship heat as the No. 4 seed (4:44.30), while South Fayette sophomore DJ Poe is seeded fifth (4:44.42), and Hampton sophomore Isaac Retsch is seeded seventh (4:44.85).
Northgate sophomore Greyson McKelvey will look to make an impact as the No. 6 seed in the 100 backstroke (52.26).
The boys 100 breaststroke will have Laurel Highlands senior Kasey Mahoney seeded third for the final (56.72) with West Allegheny senior Alex Aivalotis seeded sixth (57.89). Knoch senior Adrian Lavorini finished ninth in the prelims, finishing one one-hundredth of a second from a spot in the championship heat.
Northgate’s boys 400 free relay will swim this evening as the No. 2 seed (3:14.10). It will be the only WPIAL entry in the championship heat.
The girls 100 free final will feature four from the WPIAL led by Winchester Thurston senior Thea Siegel as the No. 3 seed (52.25). Franklin Regional freshman Anna Tomasic is seeded sixth (52.91), Indiana senior Sydney Anderson is seventh (53.02), and Shady Side Academy freshman Rachael Bummer is eighth (53.20).
Shady Side Academy junior Ava Jochims is set to go after her second straight state title in the 500 free. She is the top seed after the prelims with a time of 4:57.70. Her Bulldogs teammate, freshman Elyse Brenenborg, is seeded second (5:01.95).
Northgate sophomore Addison Hase dropped time in her prelim swim and is seeded fourth for the finals (5:06.34), while Franklin Regional senior Magdalena Hull checks in as the No. 8 seed (5:14.46).
The girls 100 back will have Hampton senior Lainey Sheets as the top seed (55.17) in her attempt to claim her second PIAA title in as many days (100 fly).
Northgate sophomore JoAnn Cook is seeded third (57.74), Franklin Regional junior Scarlett Zolnak is seeded fourth (58.37), Hopewell junior Hazel McCowin is the fifth seed (58.59), Oakland Catholic junior Luci Mazurek is seeded sixth (58.89), and Hampton senior Libby Sheets is seeded eighth (59.21).
Southmoreland senior Allison Stinnett heads to the finals of the girls 100 breast as the No. 3 seed (1:04.67), and she will be joined by Cornell sophomore Mimi Chamberlain as the No. 6 seed (1:05.71), and Shady Side Academy freshman Ella Kiger as the No. 8 seed (1:06.23).
Franklin Regional (3:33.94), Shady Side Academy (3:34.36), Indiana (3:38.42) and Hampton (3:38.52) are seeded second through fifth, respectively, in the finals of the girls 400 free relay.
Northgate will join that group as the No. 7 seed (3:40.51).
The boys’ consolation and championship finals will be at 4:30 p.m. with the girls’ finals to follow at 7.
The eight entries in each championship heat will earn medals.
Pennsylvania Cable Network will provide live coverage of each consolation and finals heat.
Before titles are won in swimming, the Class 2A girls champion will be crowned in diving. The winner will be determined after the final dive at about 3:30 p.m.
