Power outages continue to disrupt Southwestern Pennsylvania after Friday storms with high winds took down power lines.

More than 48,400 households in the Pittsburgh area had power outages Sunday morning.

Duquesne Light reported more than 29,200 customers without power as of 9:30 a.m., with about 26,300 in Allegheny County and about 3,000 in Beaver County.

West Penn Power still had more than 19,200 customers without power on Sunday as well. Westmoreland County had about 4,000, Butler County about 2,900, Washington County about 2,700, Allegheny County about 2,200, Armstrong County about 1,900 and Beaver County 1,200. Fayette was at 192 outages Sunday morning.

Both electric companies had customer alerts on their websites Sunday morning.

“We are continuing to safely respond to power outages across our service territory following Friday’s high-wind event,” Duquesne Light’s website said. “Safety remains our top priority, and several factors affect the pace of our restoration efforts, including damage assessment. When storms impact thousands of circuits, it takes longer for troubleshooters to identify causes, locate damaged equipment and determine what materials and crews are needed.”

A Duquesne Light spokesperson on Saturday said the company asked for help from utility crews in neighboring states and Canada to support restoration efforts.

“Due to the extent of the damage and ongoing windy conditions in some areas, restoration work is expected to continue over the next few days,” West Penn Power said on its website.

West Penn Power, Duquesne Light and Westmoreland officials could not be reached for immediate comment.
