Layup lines: Greensburg Central Catholic advanced to the semifinals for the third time in four years with a 65-51 come-from-behind victory over Trinity (Camp Hill) in the quarterfinals in Altoona. Erica Gribble sparked GCC, which trailed 34-29 at halftime, with a big third quarter. The Centurions outscored the Shamrocks, 23-3, to take command and pull away. Gribble finished with 25 points, Avery Jones added 16 and Jayla Peterson had 14 in the victory. GCC has not reached the PIAA finals since 1997 when it won its lone state title with a 48-45 win over Trinity (Camp Hill) in the 2A final. GCC has made the semifinals 10 times in school history. This is the first time it made the semis in 3A. … Shady Side Academy is back in the state semis after reaching the championship game last year and falling to Loyalsock, 55-43. The Bulldogs are coming off a 59-32 victory over Central Cambria in the quarterfinals Friday at Armstrong. Shady Side Academy took a 27-21 lead into halftime before outscoring Central Cambria, 32-11, in the second half, including 20-5 in the third quarter. Leah Buford scored a game-high 20 points for the Bulldogs, and Karis Thomas and Laila Banner had nine each. Shady Side Academy beat GCC in the WPIAL championship, 57-40, as Thomas scored 21 points and made 10 of 10 free throws. Sauer added 14 points and seven rebounds. Jones led GCC with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Gribble was limited to nine points, a year after scoring 31 in GCC’s 56-51 win in the WPIAL championship. Gribble is a Richmond commit, and Thomas is headed to Purdue Fort Wayne. Both have more than 2,000 career points. Shady Side lost in the state quarterfinals two years ago to Westmont Hilltop, 47-41. The last time Burke coached against a team four times in a season was in 2018-19, when she was the coach at Bethel Park. Peters Township won all four times on the way to a 30-0 season.
