One dog died and a second was hurt in a fire that caused substantial damage Sunday to a Greensburg home.

The fire at 208 Peterinelli Way, an alley between West Third and West Fourth streets, was reported shortly after 6 p.m.

No one was at home at the time of the fire, fire Chief Tom Bell said.

Firefighters entering the house found a dog at the front door, which they removed from the house and resuscitated, Bell said. It had suffered burns to its nose, ears and back, and was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

Another dog was found in a kennel on the second floor. It could not be revived and died from smoke inhalation, Bell said.

The fire started in the area of the kitchen table, Bell said. The cause was under investigation.

Firefighters contained the fire to the first floor, where Bell said there was quite a bit of damage to the kitchen and living room. There was smoke damage throughout.

Firefighters opened a few walls to make sure the fire did not spread to the second floor, Bell said.

Firefighters had the fire under control within 15 minutes and were at the scene for about 90 minutes, Bell said.

The people who live in the house had a place to stay, Bell said.
