Trib HSSN basketball team of the week – Chartiers Valley Colts boys

Coach – Corey Dotchin (second season)

Record – 26-2 overall, 11-1 and champions of Section 4-5A

#Earned – This decade has been a bit of a gold rush for Corey Dotchin.

It began when he was an assistant coach at Highlands when the Golden Rams won the 2020 Class 4A title over Belle Vernon.

A year later, he became the head coach at Highlands for three years before taking the open Chartiers Valley boys basketball coaching job.

Since then, he is a perfect 2 for 2 with two WPIAL Class 5A championships in two years as Colts’ bench boss.

Speaking of two, CV is now two wins from adding more gold. However, this would be a state championship, something the Colts have never achieved.

They moved two steps closer this past week with two more victories on the Road to Hershey.

Chartiers Valley crushed Cocalico from District 3 in the PIAA Class 5A second round this past Tuesday, 64-25.

The Colts raced out to leads of 22-5 after one quarter and 40-10 by halftime.

There was no blowout three days later in the state quarterfinals.

Going up against District 6 champion Johnstown, the teams were deadlocked after two quarters, 21-21.

Leading by one, the Colts shut down the Trojans in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 11-6 to win and advance, 42-36.

Chartiers Valley will now play District 3 champion West York in Altoona on Monday.

Scoring stars – Senior guard Julius Best has lived up to his name, becoming possibly the top sixth man in the district.

Best came off the bench to lead the way with 18 points in the win over Johnstown, two games after scoring 18 to be the high scorer in the first round win over Exeter Township.

In the state quarterfinals, Colts sophomore swingman Luca Federico added 13 points.

The talented Federico was unstoppable In the WPIAL title game victory over Thomas Jefferson two weeks ago, scoring 31 points.

In Chartiers Valley’s second round rout of Calico on Tuesday, Federico had 15 points, Best and senior guard Julian Semplice scored 14 points and senior forward Jake Lewis added 10 points.
