Glenshaw Public Library, 1504 Butler Plank Road, Shaler, was established in 1895 and is known as the oldest free library west of the Alleghenies.

Hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays for a quilters meet-up, 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, as well as 5 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays for a meet-up of embroiderers working on America’s Tapestry.

Various preplanned private classes and events are offered as scheduled, including:

• Roots: Adult Storytelling: 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 26. The theme of this month’s storytelling event is “Renewal.” Spring is almost here in Pittsburgh as we emerge from a cold and snowy winter. Share a tale from the thaw.

• America’s Tapestry: 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through April. The Pennsylvania branch of a national needlework group is creating a panel to mark America’s 250th anniversary. The public is invited to stop by at this time to view the panel’s progress and add a few stitches. Be sure to sign the guest book.

MILLVALE COMMUNITY LIBRARY

Millvale Community Library, 213 Grant Ave., is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Regular operating hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The library will be closed on Saturday, April 4, for the Easter break.

The Tool Lending Library is open from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Animal Friends to visit library

Animal Friends is making a pit stop at the library from 3 to 7 p.m. March 19.

A representative from Animal Friends will share some of the community programs the nonprofit organization has to offer Millvale pet owners, including an upcoming spay and neuter clinic.

Visitors are invited to explore opportunities, get involved, ask questions and talk about their pets and their needs.

Animal Friends also offers assistance with pet food, veterinary care, pet training, behavior support, youth education, basic pet care supplies and community cat care resources. If you are in need, fill out a request form at tinyurl.com/mr2uwcc9.

Millvale Community Library is participating in Library Giving Day on April 1.

Libraries serve as community cornerstones, providing essential services such as free access to books, technology, educational programs and more.

Millvale Community Library welcomes contributions from individuals and businesses to support its free Fridge and Pantry, Tool Lending Library, general programming and operations fund.

Rube Goldberg Workshop open to kids

Children 6 to 13 are invited to a free Squonk! Rube Goldberg Workshop from 4 to 5 p.m. March 28 at the library.

In this hands-on workshop where science meets art, Squonkers will build, play and explore.

Participants will learn how to harness the flow of energy using everyday objects to create quirky, complex contraptions with chain reactions — just like Rube Goldberg did.

Youths invited to play video games every Thursday

The library is starting drop-in hours from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays for youths 10 to 18 to play video games.

Grab your friends, pick a game and jump into the action!

The sessions are free, and snacks will be provided.

Classes to provide coping strategies

Are you stressed out or overwhelmed?

Do you have big emotions?

Are you snapping out and/or shutting down?

Do you feel stuck?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, we’ve got you.

The library is hosting free classes on Coping Together: Tools for Relief. The next sessions will be at 3 p.m. March 20, April 3 and April 17. The classes will explore ways to manage stress, big feels and relationship issues.

You’re welcome to attend all four classes or just the dates that work with your schedule.

New coping strategies will be introduced and practiced at each class.

Chess club underway through April 10

The Youth Chess Club for children 18 and younger meets from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. every Friday through April 10.

No experience is necessary, and there is no cost to learn to play. Members of Queens Gambit will provide the instruction.

Snacks will be provided.

Fridge, pantry open 24/7 outside library

The Millvale Free Fridge is a community fridge located on the deck behind the Millvale Community Library.

The Millvale Free Pantry is now at the same location behind the library. Both are accessible to the public 24 hours a day.

The fridge is stocked with fresh and frozen groceries and meals from community members, as well as local food partners including 412 Food Rescue, the Gardens of Millvale, Sprezzatura, Lemon Tree Coffee, Abielle Voyante Tea Co. and more.

The fridge and pantry aim to promote food security and reduce food waste. The pantry also is stocked with hygiene and personal care products.

Free music lessons available for kids, adults

You Be You Inc. offers free music lessons for all ages at the library:

• Grown-up and Me Music: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday in the community room. This free music and movement class is geared toward infants through age 4 with a caregiver. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is advised at youbeyouinc.com.

• Tween Beatmaking/Music Production: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. every Tuesday. Youngsters 8 to 12 can meet up every Tuesday and explore the beats in this new offering at the library. Upcoming programs

• Ants to Zucchini: 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Mondays through May 11. For children 18 months through 3.5 years accompanied by a grown-up. The program teaches phonological and print awareness, letter knowledge and more. No registration is required.

• Wednesday Morning Wake-Up: 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesdays. Adults 21 and older are welcome to dance along with the oldies but goodies. Everyone can move at their own pace. The program is held every Wednesday in the library’s community room before normal operating hours. No registration is required.

• Easy Make Night for Adults — Pressed Flower Fun: 6 to 8 p.m. March 24. For anyone 18 and older who wants to craft and unplug during a relaxing, stress-free evening. Food and drink are served at this event. Registration is required, but drop-ins are welcome as space permits.

• Tail Waggin’ Tutors (Therapy Dogs): 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 28. Children in kindergarten and up are encouraged to sign up for a 15-minute session to read to their favorite therapy dog on the last Saturday of every month. To give more youngsters an opportunity to read, registration is required, and a child may register for up to two sessions. You can sign up for more if slots are still open on program day. • Second Annual Friendly, Family Bake-Off: 2 to 3 p.m. March 28. Bake your best cake or cupcake. There will be prizes and great fun. Families of all kinds are welcome to compete; each family should include one child under 18 and one adult over 18. Space is limited. Judges will sample your creations, and prizes will be awarded to all. If possible, please bake enough of your treat to share with 30 people, but no worries, we will provide extra treats. You will receive more details after registering. Registration is required.

Learn how to grow orchids

Demetria Marsh, co-president of the Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania (OSWP), will provide an introductory presentation on orchids and how to grow them in one’s home from 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 24.

During Orchids 101: Everything You Wanted to Know About Orchids (and Were Afraid to Ask), Marsh will demystify the growing of orchids, show several types of orchids in bloom and talk about the history, botany and orchid growing culture.

Attendees can enter to win a raffle for four passes to the Phipps Conservatory.

Food and drink will be served at this event, and registration is required.

The OSWP is gearing up for its annual Orchid Show. The show will take place April 11 and 12 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel & Suites, 164 Fort Couch Road in Bethel Park, across from South Hills Village.
