Verona man shot several times

A man was shot several times late Sunday in Verona, according to borough police.

First responders were called around 10:20 p.m. to the 500 block of Vogels Lane, where police Chief Thomas Dessell said the shooting occurred inside a home.

The victim was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

Verona police, with assistance from Penn Hills, Oakmont and Plum, conducted a search, Dessell said in a release.

The suspect is at large.

Allegheny County Police are investigating.

“We understand that news of this nature is deeply unsettling,” Dessell said, adding that he believes the shooting was a targeted incident.

“There is no broad, ongoing threat to the public.”

Butler firefighter seriously injured in weekend windstorms

A volunteer firefighter from Oneida Valley Fire Company was seriously injured Friday after being struck by a tree and a vehicle during the heavy windstorms.

Mike King was responding to a call for a fallen tree when a second tree struck him, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The incident happened along Oneida Valley Road in Oakland Township as high winds tore through the region, downing power lines and toppling trees and signs.

King was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he remains in the intensive care unit.


Washington County student killed in dirt bike crash

A student from the California Area School District was killed Friday night after a dirt bike crash, according to a letter posted to the district’s social media.

The incident occurred near Highland Drive and Hill Street in California Borough, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The school district issued a letter to families, saying grief counselors and therapy dogs would be available Monday.

“The California Area Trojan family mourns with and offers our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones most impacted by this tragedy,” the school district said in the letter sent to families. “We stand together as a community, united in support of the family during this profound loss.”
