A shooting Sunday night in Verona was not a random act of violence, according to borough police Chief Thomas Dessell.
“This was targeted,” Dessell told TribLive.
As of Monday morning, police had not identified a suspect, he said.
First responders were called around 10:20 p.m. to the 500 block of Vogels Lane on Sunday, where Dessell said the shooting occurred inside a home. Police said they found a man inside with several gunshot wounds. Dessell said the man had multiple wounds in his torso and chest.
The man was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Dessell said the man remained in stable condition at the hospital Monday morning.
Officials believe the man who was shot was staying in the home but was not a permanent resident of Verona, Dessell told TribLive.
Verona, Oakmont, Penn Hills and Allegheny County police reported to the scene Sunday night.
County Police are leading the investigation. According to the department’s spokesperson, James Madalinsky, there was no new information regarding the investigation as of Monday morning.
A Facebook post from the Riverview School District said parents and community members should expect to see a heightened police presence at pickup and drop-off times following the incident “to ensure staff and families feel safe.”
The district’s security guards have also been notified of the incident, the statement said.
“Fortunately, no Riverview students or families were affected, and there is no threat at this time to either community,” the statement said.
The district did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
The statement did not clarify if the police presence would be focused on Verner Elementary School, which is located about 500 feet from where the shooting occurred, or if police presence would be heightened across the district’s buildings.
