Kennedy Kuntz, a Chartiers Valley High School senior, was named a court maiden for this year’s Miss Smiling Irish Eyes contest.

The Miss Smiling Irish Eyes contest recognizes young women who exemplify Irish pride, leadership and community involvement. Candidates must have outstanding moral character, ethical ideals and poise, and actively promote their Irish heritage while being involved in local civic organizations.

“When I was selected, I was truly surprised and honored,” said Kuntz, 17, of Collier. “This is something I have dreamed of participating in since I was a little girl, especially because my dad’s cousin was a previous Miss Smiling Irish Eyes and his uncle, the late Michael Gallagher, was a former Parade Grand Marshal.”

Court maidens participated in Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day traditions, including the Button Party, the kickoff to parade season; radio and TV interviews; presentations to city and county councils; the St. Patrick’s Day Mass and the holiday parade.

“Being named a Miss Smiling Irish Eyes court maiden is an honor because it’s a beautiful celebration of heritage, a platform for leadership, and an opportunity to honor my family legacy while representing Pittsburgh’s Irish community with pride and grace,” Kuntz said.

Kuntz is involved in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities at Chartiers Valley.

She is a four-year varsity soccer player and team captain and earned WPIAL all-section honors this past fall. She was also in show band for three years, softball for three years, and competed on the girls swim team.

Kuntz maintains a 4.9 grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. She is a member of the senior class social committee

Growing up, Kuntz volunteered at Our Lady of Grace Parish CCD and helped teach children with intellectual disabilities.

“This experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for service, empathy and the importance of supporting others in reaching their potential,” she said.

In June 2024, Kuntz participated in mission work with Move a Mountain’s mustard seed mission trip in Jamaica.

Upon graduation, Kuntz plans to attend Westminster College to continue her soccer career and pursue a major in biology and a minor in psychology. Her career goal is to become a genetic counselor.
