Sharpsburg Officer Daniel Sciulli was retired for three days before he started another full-time job.

The Shaler resident, who protected and served with the Sharpsburg Police Department for 30 years, counts himself fortunate to have had such a long career in law enforcement in the same community.

Sciulli’s retirement was effective March 12. He said his modesty almost kept him from showing up for a proclamation by Sharpsburg Mayor Kayla Portis that day honoring his years of service.

“I had a job to do for 30 years, and I just did it,” he said.

Sciulli began his new job as an officer with the Duquesne University Department of Public Safety.

Thirty years working the night shift was Sciulli’s typical schedule. He said it was routine, for the most part.

“I knew everyone practically. I had a really nice 30-year career in Sharpsburg, and I really liked the community,” Sciulli said.

Sciulli grew up in Oakland and then Greenfield. He graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School in 1992.

“I know it seems cliché, but I liked helping people,” Sciulli said of his decision to enroll in IUP’s police academy where he completed more than 420 hours of police training and graduated at age 22.

His gig at Duquesne University is not that different from patrolling Sharpsburg, albeit there are a lot of students looking at their cellphones, he said.

“It’s the same thing just different patches,” Sciulli said.

Portis emphasized Sciulli’s long career in Sharpsburg as significant.

“Sciulli’s three decades of service represent a significant contribution to the Borough of Sharpsburg and stand as a testament to the vital role of public safety professionals in maintaining strong and secure communities,” Portis proclaimed, in part.

“On behalf of the Borough of Sharpsburg, we extend our heartfelt appreciation and best wishes to Officer Sciulli for a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.”

At 51, Scuilli remains far from a traditional retirement age. When he’s not working, he enjoys coaching little league baseball in Shaler and fishing.
